Prices - Quotations & Estimates
We are always happy to give either quotations or estimates for our
double glazing, doors & porches. What, you may well ask, is the
difference? The answer may surprise you! An estimate is just that,
an estimate of what something might, or even probably will cost.
But beware, the legal definition of a contract based upon an estimate
allows for extra costs to be added for any 'unforeseen' or 'extra'
items during the work being carried out. These potential additional
items and costs would be your problem, payable by you. So, beware
of entering into a contract based upon an estimate. Especially if
it is with a builder as part of larger building works. Within the
building trade, this is a well known ploy used by the unscrupulous
to put in low estimates and undercut other prices. Once they have
the job and it is underway, you may find it very difficult, if not
impossible, to get the job finished without having to pay for 'extras.'
A quotation, by comparison, is an offer to carry out and complete
specific work for a fixed sum. If you enter into a contract based
upon a quotation, then the contractor is legally obliged to complete
the work at the agreed (contracted) price, irrespective of any 'unforeseen'
or 'extra' items that may come up. (see note on quality
& service page for full details)
In practise, we do not enter into contracts based upon estimates;
unless they are for very small straightforward jobs, or for existing
customers or for where the work has been specified by an architect
or other expert. Having said that, many of our contracts start off
as estimates!
Estimates
We provide estimates every day based upon sizes, designs, etc, that
are given to us by telephone, email or fax. If you would like an
estimate, please consult our guide
page.
If our estimate is of interest, then we can come and check the details
and confirm it as a quotation. Usually, the estimated price is correct.
On the rare occasion that it is significantly different, then you
have not committed yourself and you can think about things and always
get other quotes before making your final decision.
We have noticed that the process from a customer first contacting
us, through estimating & quoting to placing an order, often takes
weeks or months. Occasionally, even a year or more! This is especially
true when people are seeking an estimate, or guide price, for double
glazing for a possible new property purchase or major refurbishment
involving other works. We know that our approach may appear very
laid back compared to other replacement window suppliers, but it
works for us!
Quotations
In order to provide a quotation, we need to visit the property to
confirm designs & specifications, check for anything unusual or
out of the ordinary, and take measurements. If the job is straightforward,
we can often give you a price there and then. If it is more complicated
or there are several alternatives to be priced, then we can come
back to you by telephone, fax, letter or email. This process and
our ethical sales policy is fully detailed under Sales
& Marketing Policy.
