* & ** Timber Grading

Timbers are graded as * "moderately durable" and ** "durable." The test for grading is to drive an untreated stake into the ground; if it takes between 10 & 15 years for the stake to rot and fall, then it is "moderately durable." If it takes between 15 & 25 years, then it is "durable." As the test is carried out with untreated timber that is in contact with the ground, it follows that properly treated and maintained timber in a normal situation will last for many more years.

Indeed, there are many thousands of both softwood and hardwood existing windows that are well in excess of 100 years old.
